This morning I had a client who was down on himself because he ate more than he thought he should have over the Halloween Holiday. He said to me, I have good news and bad news...I braced myself and listened. When I heard what it was that he was eating, I thought,…

As I prepare for my upcoming race, strength training seems very important because of
the distance and time I will be out on the course. I feel like increasing my muscle mass
will help with the pounding my body will take over the 100 mile course. I haven’t had
a lot of time to train, and my running mind tells me that I need to be out running every
possible moment. But over the past 6 years, I have read different opinions on the subject
of strength training for endurance…

It has been awhile since I have written anything about my training for my 100 mile race. I have been so busy with the other things in my life. My training has really intensified because my time is so limited. I have 4 kids at home that are so busy and I just adopted 160 kids at BYU. I’m starting to taper now and have not run any distance over 10 miles these past 2 weeks. I’m lifting…

I had a great week of training. I ranthe first 16 miles of the Wasatch 100 on Saturday. It starts in Layton and goes north on the Bonneville Shoreline trail and connects into the Great Western trail. It is a great trail with some good climbs. I'm feeling so much stronger. I lifted hard on Monday and ran 8 miles today and feel great. I feel the strength training is really helping my climbing and recovery. During one of the climbs on Saturday, I passed a few…

I’m a little late on my blog for the run on Friday. I did the 10 mile loop up dry canyon and felt really good going up. It was hotter then I expected and I ran out of water about 7 miles into it. It is amazing how much a little dehydration messes with your energy. I felt really tired coming down and overall sluggish. I will start caring more water with me and a little more…

I started my run up dry canyon and it was a beautiful morning. I was feeling really good, and as I climbed the mountain my mind started to wonder. I realized I was all alone. I started to imagine what I would do if a cougar attacked me. Grab a rock and with my amazing strength, I would fight off the cougar and be able to tell an amazing story. As I started to climb to the base of Timp I had forgotten what a beast of a climb it was. I started to imagine a cougar putting me out of my misery. I…

I worked out with Rob this morning and we did a hard upper body workout with some core. I then got on the treadmill and walked at 15% grade for 30 minutes and stretched out. Dave, my physical therapist worked on my sore piriformis and low back. I took it a little easy today because I plan on going 20 miles with Carlos tomorrow up the nasty dry canyon trail. Still looking to see how…

I have been lifting really aggressive the last couple of days and I feel great. I lifted with my brother Carlos this morning and my friend Jack and his son in law Rob. After lifting for an hour with my legs I went on a 13 mile run up in the mountains. I was a little nervous because I haven’t run for a few weeks. My legs felt great but I can feel my cardio needs some work. It will be…

I have been training for my big race for over 4 months. The longest training run I have done so far is about 30 miles. I have been doing more and more strength and core training and less running. I feel so fantastic with the decrease in running and increase in strength training. My big concern is that my aerobic or fat burning capabilities will really suffer and I wont be able to…

I spend a good amount of time talking with clients about their pain and its source. One instance today was elbow pain. This came from a patient who underwent shoulder surgery to repair her rotator cuff. She reported pain that felt like a clamp around her elbow and down the forearm. Without evidence of a fall onto the arm or elbow, its clear that her…

We did another 6 mile run yesterday, up in the mountains. It is so beautiful in the morning. I’m really feeling strong on the hills and am starting to really push it. I have been timing our runs with my GPS and we have really improved over the past few weeks. We started doing a 14 min pace and have it down to a 12:45 min pace. There are some real nasty hills and the trail is brutal…

Matt and I went and lifted this morning at elevate. We are doing some really aggressive core workouts. My abs and back are really tired and my arms are shot. I’m really feeling good overall and feel the weight training is taking my fitness to a different level. My diet is really getting dialed in and my weight is right were I want it for now. I feel great physically but…

We had the first tough training run of the new schedule. It was a 10 mile run in deep snow. It felt more like a 13-14 mile run. My hip flexors were on fire most of the run because you have to drag your feet and legs through the deep snow. There were also some big climbs that we did and the deep snow made those even harder. We still really enjoyed the run and the weather was…

If I thought that getting into an aggressive weight training program for my 100 miler was a little strange then this workout is over the top. We are going to do a pool workout every Friday to give our legs a rest but continue working on our anaerobic threshold. We did high speed intervals in my pool with sets of planks and pushups. It was really hard. I have really enjoyed our…

We did sets of bench press, dips, dead lifts and jump squats today. It felt more like preparing for football then a 100 miler. As I look at our training right now, it goes against all that I have been taught over the years about endurance training. So why am I doing this? I believe that the more power I can produce now in my base training that it will benifit me later in my endurance phase. As I'm doing my hill work now, I'm feeling the strength in my legs and core from training. It feels…

I just finished my training schedule for the wasatch and Bear 100. I will have run over 1200 miles in preperation for this race. My friends wife said we should just run the 100 miles now and skip the 1200 miles. I think she might have a point. This morning we woke up at 5am and did a 6 mile run up into the mountains. Waking up that early will never get easy. This will be the base of our running foundation for the next couple of months. There are some very aggressive elevation changes in this…
